ObjectiveTo discuss the clinical value of self-expandable metal stent endoprosthesis in malignant proximal colon obstruction.MethodsFrom January 2009 to December 2013, 32 patients of malignant proximal colon obstruction and 55 patients of distal colon obstruction were treated with self-expandable metal stent endoprosthesis.Technical success, clinical improvements, complications were compared between two groups.Results25 cases of malignant proximal colon obstruction and 52 cases of distal colon obstructions were successfully inserted metal stent.The technical success rate in two groups was 78.1% and 94.5% respectively.The technical success rate in proximal colon obstructions group was lower than that in distal colon obstructions group (P<0.05).Clinical improvement in two groups was 100% and 94.2% respectively.There was no significant differences between two groups(P＞0.05).Complications in proximal colon obstructions group was lower than that in distal colon obstructions group (P<0.05).ConclusionsSelf-expandable metal stent endoprosthesis is more difficult in malignant proximal colon obstruction.The placement of self-expandable metal stent is a safe, effective and well tolerated treatment for patients with malignant proximal colon obstruction.
