Abstract:Objective To investigate how the expression of Matrix metalloproteinases 9(MMP-9)and Thrombospondin 1(TSP-1)would be related to microvessel density(MVD)in breast cancer and its implication for the prognosis. Method With immunohistochemical staining method, the expression level of MMP-9 and TSP-1 were measured in tissues from 131 breast cancer patients. The relation between the two biomarkers and MVD and prognosis of breast cancer was analyzed. Results In 131 breast cancer patients, expression of TSP-1 in stroma was negatively related to MVD(Spearman relation index=-0.241, P=0.006). The co-overexpression of MMP-9/TSP-1 was significantly related to tumor size, lymph node metastasis, and pathological stage(P<0.05). And survival analysis revealed that co-overexpression of MMP-9/TSP-1 was unfavorable prognostic factor in breast cancer. Conclusion MMP-9/TSP-1 co-overexpression was an independent unfavorable prognostic factor for breast cancer.
